About
Sherry L. Hicks, MFA
Performance Artist · Oh Coda · ASL Storyteller
Sherry Hicks is an extraordinary woman artist who has developed into an exceptional solo and collaborative performance artist. With international acclaim as an artist, storyteller and stand-up comedian, her work focuses on improvisation in ASL storytelling.
Sherry blends the elements of theatre, music, movement and native ability with American Sign Language (ASL) along with her uncanny ability to enchant her audiences of all ages and backgrounds. She calls her craft "musically inspired ASL storytelling" and is proud to be a Coda entertainer bringing her Deaf, hearing and Coda worlds together.
ASL is her first language and all the members of her family are Deaf — she is the only hearing member (Only Hearing Child of Deaf Adults), known as an Oh Coda. She is a co-founder of the coda-centric dynamic duo Half-n-Half. Currently Hicks makes her home in the San Francisco Bay Area where she is available for work as an ASL/English interpreter, ASL Entertainer, Educator and Consultant.
Her research interests focus on bimodal bilingualism of codas internationally and in the United States.
Beloved Character
Meet Mabel
One of Sherry's most beloved characters, "Mabel" is her famed Deaf senior citizen character who has been called "everyone's Deaf grandmother." With Mabel, audiences find universal themes and witness Sherry's uncanny ability to use ASL in its form reflecting 1930s ASL. Mabel has international acclaim in Deaf and Coda communities and has appeared all over the globe.
